In accordance with the Article 131 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan the Supreme Court is the highest judicial body general and specialized law courts of referred to the civil (including economic disputes), criminal and other cases.
The Supreme Court of the Republic of Azerbaijan review of complaints on decisions of the Courts of Appeal as a cassation instance, gives explanations on issues related to practice of the courts.
There are civil, criminal, military and administrative - economic boards in the Supreme Court.
Boards of Supreme Court considers the cassation complaints and cassation protests on the decisions of the Courts of Appeal, the cassation complaints and cassation protests on the decisions of the Supreme Court of Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic Courts of Appeal, on cases of decisions made by the common and specialized courts as defined by law, cases given by presentation of Chairman of the Supreme Court as per rules and cases defined by the legislation
Boards of the Supreme Court  analyzes judicial statistics, studies and summarizes judicial practice, render methodical assistance to the courts of Republic of Azerbaijan, and implements other powers vested in by legislation of
Azerbaijan Republic.  
Judges of the Supreme Court of the Azerbaijan Republic are appointed by the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan upon the recommendation of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
