Chemical and petrochemical industry in Azerbaijan

The date of formation of chemical industry in Azerbaijan falls in the 50-60s of the last century. In 1938, the construction of synthetic rubber and other chemical plants started in Sumgait city. 

The outbreak of World War II caused a pause in the construction works in Sumgait, beginning from 1945, heavy industrial enterprises- Chemical, Tube-rolling, Synthetic-rubber, Aluminum, Super-phosphate plants were consecutively put into operation in Sumgait. The chemical plant, which was put into operation in 1966, was considered the greatest petrochemical enterprise at that period in Europe. 

In the 70-80s, those plants worked at full capacity and imported products to nearly all regions of the former USSR. This economic growth made Sumgait one of the greatest cities of Azerbaijan.

In 1981, the EP-300 complex, which had high production capacity and modern, large-loaded technology without waste, and which produced valuable products of petrol chemistry- ethylene and propylene, was constructed. It was planned to use hydrocarbon raw material of oil refineries of the Republic in the complex. To note, the construction of such a complex with modern and advanced technology was a great success for that period, especially in the USSR. Namely owing to the EP-300 device, Ethylene-propylene plant produces high-quality propylene, which is I great demand in the world market and that device plays the role of main raw material supplier for the general development of chemical complex in our republic.

In that period, simultaneously with the EP-300, the foundation of “Polimir-120” complex was also laid, which was somehow technological continuation of the first one and was intended for polyethylene production. These unique complexes were especially valuable and relevant due to the fact that raw material for the main unit- EP-300 was not brought from abroad, but was provided from the hydrocarbon products produced in the oil refineries of the republic.

In the early XXI century- in the period of independence, another enormous complex- unique Steam-generator unit was bought from Japan with the state guarantee on credit. These complexes were constructed by taking into consideration the future perspectives and thanks to them today it is possible to preserve the harmonious operation of enterprises of “Azerkimya” State Company and the working places of more than 8000 chemists.

The majority of chemical enterprises have high energy capacity; energy consumption to single product manufacturing is quite high. Special weight of electrical power and energy bearers is very high in the cost of some chemical products, even more than 50%.

The enterprises in the composition of “Azerkimya” State Company gained great achievements by increasing the volume and quality of production in the recent years. This paved the way for the company for holding an honorable place in the world market. Currently, the enterprises of the company manufacture high quality products of various brands- polyethylene, pyrolysis tar, propylene, technical and absolute isopropyl alcohol, propylene oxide, propylene glycol, polyesters of various brands, BDF (butylenes divinyl fraction), caustic soda and chlorine, technical sulfuric acid, etc; a portion of these products are intended for domestic demand and a great portion is exported to the close and distant foreign countries.  

Etilen-polietilen zavodunda istehsal edilən yüksək təzyiqli polietilenə, “Sintez-kauçuk” zavodunun qiymətli məhsulu olan mütləqləşdirilmiş izopropil spirtinə - MİPS-ə beynəlxalq bazarda olan tələbat ildən-ilə artır. Kimya müəssisələrinin digər məhsulları da xarici şirkət və firmalar tərəfindən böyük tələbatla və iri həcmdə alınır.

Hazırda “Azərkimya” markalı kimyəvi məhsullar geniş çeşiddə və iri həcmdə dünyanın bir çox qabaqcıl ölkələrinə, o cümlədən, ABŞ, Almaniya, İngiltərə, İsveçrə, Rusiya, Türkiyə, Polşa, Rumıniya, İran, Ukrayna, Gürcüstan, Qazaxıstan, Özbəkistan və s. ölkələrə ixrac edilir. Bütün bunlar bugünkü kimya və neft-kimya kompleksinin iftixar doğuran nailiyyətləridir və Azərbaycanın kompleks inkişafının tərkib hissəsidir. 

2003-cü illə müqayisədə əmtəəlik məhsul istehsalı həcmi 2 dəfədən çox artmışdır. Həmin dövr ərzində məhsul ixracı 3,6 dəfə çoxalmışdır ki, bu da respublikaya xarici valyuta axınının ümumi həcmini xeyli artırıb.

Azərbaycan kimyaçıları son illərdə əmək məhsuldarlığını da əhəmiyyətli dərəcədə artırmışlar. Artıq bir işçiyə düşən məhsul istehsalının həcmi rekord səviyyədə-2,57 dəfə çoxalıb. “Azərkimya” Dövlət Şirkəti müəssisələrinin istehsal etdiyi onlarla qiymətli kimya və neft-kimya məhsulları dünyanın ən qabaqcıl və yüksək inkişaf etmiş ölkələrinin nüfuzlu firma və şirkətləri tərəfindən yüksək tələbatla alınır. Təsadüfi deyil ki, məhz Azərbaycan istehsalı olan MİPS onun istehsalçısı olan firma və müəssisələr arasında öz yüksək keyfiyyət göstəricilərinə görə beynəlxalq qurumlar tərəfindən “Arka Avropa” qızıl mükafatına layiq görülüb. Bununla yanaşı, 2009-cu ildə “Üzvi sintez” Zavodu Beynəlxalq Kommersiya Rəhbərləri Klubunun (Madrid) qərarı ilə “Texnologiya və keyfiyyətə görə” beynəlxalq mükafatına, bütünlükdə isə “Azərkimya” Dövlət Şirkəti Beynəlxalq İdarəetmə və Məsləhətləşmə Assosiasiyasının (Fransa) qərarı ilə “Keyfiyyət və biznes prestijinə görə” Qızıl mükafata layiq görülmüşdür.
