Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Azerbaijan is central body of executive power implementing the foreign policy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, protecting the sovereignty, security, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders, of its political, economic, social and other interests with diplomatic ways and means, ensuring the diplomatic and consular relations of its citizens, legal entities in abroad, with  other states, international organizations.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Azerbaijan was established during the years 1918-1920.  In these years, the heads of the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Department Mammadhasan Hajinsky, Alimardan bey Topchubashov, Fatali Khan Khoyski, and Mammadyusif Jafarov like diplomats and statesmen won a great honor in their positions in history.
In April of 1920 after the collapse of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was abolished and instead of it People\'s Commissariat of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic has been established. However, after the establishment of USSR an independent foreign policy of Azerbaijan was completely banned. Only at the end of the Second World War the Soviet government  restored People\'s Commissariat of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan SSR in 1944 in accordance with the own interests. Since 1946, this institution has become the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. But Ministry of Foreign Affairs of that period still was not a structure with strong power.
During the Soviet era Azerbaijan took part in the country\'s international relations in this or other level.
At the end of the XX century, Azerbaijan re-gaining its independence for the second time began to establish bilateral and multilateral international relations. Its state independence was recognized by the most countries of the world and diplomatic relations were established. Azerbaijan was one of the founders and a member of the international and regional organizations.
