Population migrationMigration of the population in the country in different periods of time in the history was happened due to the socio-political and economic factors. At the beginning of the XIX century (1828) when Azerbaijan had become a part of Russia, first, Armenians (especially in Karabakh) immigrated here in the second half of the first century, and then Russian to Mugan, Gedebey, the Upper Shirvan-Absheron areas. At the end of the nineteenth century and in the early twentieth century in connection with the development of the oil industry, the representatives of various nations from many regions of the world came here. During the Second World War, the Russian, Ukraine, Belarus and other nations, which were shifted here from the war-affected areas of the former USSR had been a part of our republic. Since 60-70 years of the twentieth century, the population of Azerbaijan migrated to Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Central Asian republics. For the first time 0,4-40 thousand people every year migrated to the republic of Russia, Moscow, cities of St. Petersburg, Siberia, the Far East and other regions. In 1948-53 more than 150 thousand Azerbaijanis compulsorily shifted from Armeniam from their history of the lands to our republic. The main direction of migration within the country is from rural areas to cities. 1/5 of migrating population comes to Baku. Recently, the population of Karabakh and adjacent territories with Armenia and other areas are accommodated particularly in the Absheron peninsula.
