Azerbaijan State Telegraph Agency - AzerTaj is a leading information agency of the republic, and the only official state information source for local and foreign mass media.
Azertaj founded in March 1, 1920 by the government of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic later, during the years of Soviet power had different names.
After re-gaining the state independence of Azerbaijan the historical name of the agency was restored. Since March 3, 1995 it is called as State Telegraph Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers and since January 17, 2000 it was named as Azerbaijan State Telegraph Agency.
In addition to the official state news Azertaj disseminates exact and operative information on political, and economic issues, science, education, culture, health, sports, environment, etc. uninterruptedly during the day, in Azerbaijani, Russian, English, French, German and Arabic languages.
AzerTaj has signed agreements on cooperation with news agencies like ITAR-TASS (Russia), Anadolu Agency (Turkey), Sinkhua (China), AGERPRES (Romania), Ukrinform (Ukraine), BTA (Bulgaria), ANSA (Italy), IRNA (Iran), TANYUQ (Serbia), BELTA (Belarus), Moldpres (Moldova), ATA (Albania), MTI (Hungary), MENA (Egypt), Petra (Jordan), Antara (Indonesia), MONTSAME (Mongolia), Yonhap (Korea Republic), LETA (Latvian), Kabara (Kyrgyzstan), Kazinform (Kazakhstan), KUNA (Kuwait), Khovar (Tajikistan), KYODO (Japan), BuaNews (South Africa). In 2004 it joined the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), and in April 18, 2008, the European Alliance News Agencies (EANA). Azertaj is one of founders of Association of National News Agencies (Ania) of member-states of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Turkic-speaking News Agencies Union (TKA), and Association of National News Agencies (PANIA) of the member-countries of Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization. Azertaj is a member of AsiaPulse, the Asian News Agencies Consortium since 2008.
